Maps and where we live

A map is a special picture that shows us what a place looks like from above, and it helps us find where things are!

A map shows places.

Have you ever looked down from a tall building or a hill and seen all the houses, roads, and trees below you? A map is like a drawing of that view from up high! Maps help us see where places are and how to get from one place to another. They are one of the most helpful tools people have ever invented.

Here is a first example: imagine your bedroom. If you drew a picture of it looking straight down from the ceiling β€” showing your bed, your desk, and your door β€” that little drawing would be a simple map of your room! It shows where everything is.

Here is a second example: think about the street where you live. A map of your street would show your house, your neighbours' houses, and the road in between. If a friend wanted to visit you, they could look at the map and find your house without getting lost!

Maps can show tiny places like a classroom, or huge places like a whole country. They often use colours, symbols, and a special box called a legend or key that explains what each symbol means. Can you think of one place near your home that you would love to draw a map of?
