Plants Need Four Things to Grow

Let's discover the four things every plant needs to stay alive and grow big and strong!

Explore the world.

Have you ever wondered why we water plants or put them near a window? Plants are living things, just like you, and they need certain things to survive. Scientists have discovered that plants need four main things: sunlight, water, air, and soil (or nutrients from the ground).

Sunlight is like a plant's food factory. Plants use sunlight to make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. Their green leaves catch the light and turn it into energy โ€” how amazing is that? Water travels up from the roots all the way to the leaves to help the plant stay healthy and stand tall.

Air is important too! Plants breathe in a gas called carbon dioxide from the air, and they breathe out oxygen โ€” the very air that we breathe. That means plants and people help each other! Finally, soil holds the plant steady and gives it extra nutrients, which are like tiny vitamins that help it grow.

Next time you see a plant, think about what it needs. If a plant looks droopy or yellow, it might be missing one of its four things. You can be a plant detective and figure out what it needs!
