Animals and their homes

Every animal has a special place it calls home, and today we are going to discover what those homes look like!

Animals have homes.

Have you ever wondered where animals sleep at night or where they keep their babies safe? Just like you have a house or an apartment, every animal has its own special home too! An animal's home is the place where it lives, finds food, stays warm, and takes care of its family. We call this place its habitat or simply its home.

Let's look at our first example. Think about a bird sitting up in a tall tree. Many birds build cozy little nests out of twigs, leaves, and soft grass. The nest sits safely in the branches of a tree, high off the ground. The mother bird lays her eggs there and keeps them warm until the baby birds hatch. The tree is the bird's home!

Now think about a fish swimming in a river or the ocean. Fish live in the water โ€” that is their home! They breathe underwater using special parts called gills, and they swim around finding food among the rocks and plants beneath the surface. A fish would not be comfortable on dry land, just like you would not be comfortable living underwater!

Isn't it wonderful that every animal has a home that is just right for it? A bear has a cave, a rabbit has a burrow underground, and a bee has a hive full of honey. Each home keeps the animal safe, warm, and fed. Here is something to think about: Can you look out your window or think of a place near your home where an animal might be living right now?
