Letters and their sounds
Every letter in the alphabet makes its own special sound, and learning those sounds helps you read words!
Have you ever looked at a book and wondered how the squiggly shapes on the page turn into words you can say out loud? Those shapes are called letters, and every single letter makes its own special sound. When we learn what sound each letter makes, we can start to read! ๐
Let's think about the letter S. It looks like a little snake, and it makes the sound "sss" โ just like a snake might hiss! Now think about the letter B. It makes the sound "buh" โ like the beginning of the word ball. When you see a B at the start of a word, your mouth goes "buh". Pretty cool, right?
Here is another fun one: the letter M makes the sound "mmm" โ like when something smells so yummy you say "mmmm!" And the letter T makes a short, quick sound: "tuh" โ like the start of the word turtle. Every letter is like a little key that unlocks part of a word!
Now here is something to think about: Can you think of your name and figure out what sound the very first letter makes? Say it slowly and listen carefully โ your name is full of letter sounds just waiting to be discovered! ๐
