What is division?

Division is a way of sharing things equally so everyone gets the same amount!

Share it out fair.

Have you ever shared cookies with a friend and wanted to make sure you both got the same number? That is exactly what division is! Division is a way of splitting a group of things into equal parts. When we divide, we are sharing fairly so that each group has the same amount. It is one of the friendliest things in math!

Here is our first example. Imagine you have 6 strawberries and you want to share them equally between 2 friends (including yourself). You give one strawberry to each person, then another, then another — and you end up with 3 strawberries each. We write that as 6 ÷ 2 = 3. The ÷ sign is the division sign, and it means "shared equally between."

Here is our second example. Picture 8 building blocks that you want to put into 4 equal towers. You place 2 blocks in each tower and every tower ends up the same height. That means 8 ÷ 4 = 2. See how division helps us make equal groups? It works with toys, snacks, stickers — almost anything you can count!

Here is something to think about: if you had 10 grapes and wanted to share them equally with a friend so you each got the same number, how many grapes do you think each person would get? Take a moment to picture it in your head — you are already thinking like a mathematician! 🍇
