What is subtraction?

Subtraction means taking away some things from a group to find out how many are left.

Take 2 away. 3 left.

Have you ever had a plate of cookies and eaten a few? 🍪 Whatever is left on the plate — that is subtraction! Subtraction is when we take away some things from a group and count how many remain. It is one of the friendliest ideas in all of math, and you already do it every day without even knowing!

Here is our first example. Imagine you have 5 shiny balloons 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈. Then 2 of them float away into the sky. How many do you have left? You started with 5, you lost 2, and now you have 3 balloons. We write that like this: 5 − 2 = 3. The little minus sign ( − ) is the special symbol that tells us to take away.

Here is our second example. You have 8 grapes 🍇 in your bowl. You eat 3 of them — yum! Now count what is left: 8 take away 3 leaves you with 5 grapes. We write it as 8 − 3 = 5. See how the number gets smaller when we take things away? That is the magic of subtraction!

🌟 Reflection question: Can you think of something at home where you took some away and had less than before — maybe toys, stickers, or snacks? What did you start with, and what was left?
