What is multiplication?
Multiplication is a quick way to add the same number over and over again!
Have you ever shared stickers with your friends? Imagine you have 3 friends, and you want to give each friend 2 stickers. You could count: 2, then 2 more, then 2 more. That is adding the same number again and again! Multiplication is a special shortcut for doing exactly that. Instead of adding 2 + 2 + 2, we can say 3 times 2, which we write as 3 × 2. The little × sign means "groups of."
Here is a yummy example: Imagine you have 4 plates, and you put 3 cookies on each plate. You could count all the cookies one by one, or you could use multiplication! 4 × 3 means "4 groups of 3," which equals 12 cookies altogether. Multiplication helps us count big groups really fast!
Here is one more example to picture: Think about wheels on toy cars. Each car has 2 wheels. If you have 5 toy cars, how many wheels are there? Instead of counting 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 one step at a time, we can say 5 × 2 = 10. See how quick that was? Multiplication is like a counting superpower!
🌟 Reflection question: Can you think of something at home that comes in equal groups — like legs on chairs or petals on flowers? How could you use multiplication to count them all?
