Living and non-living things

Learn how to tell the difference between things that are alive and things that are not alive!

Some things grow.

Have you ever looked around and wondered โ€” is that rock alive? What about a butterfly? Today we are going to learn something really cool: everything in our world can be sorted into two groups โ€” living things and non-living things. ๐ŸŒฟ

A living thing is anything that is alive. Living things can grow, breathe, eat, and make babies (we call that reproducing). They also move and respond when something happens around them. Animals, plants, and people are all living things. A tiny ant crawling on the ground? Living! A tall oak tree in the park? Living too!

A non-living thing does NOT grow, breathe, or have babies. It was never alive, or it was once alive but is not anymore. Think about a smooth, grey rock sitting on the ground โ€” it just stays there and never grows or eats. Or think about your favourite toy car โ€” it can only move if YOU push it. It cannot breathe or grow on its own. Those are non-living things.

๐ŸŒŸ Reflection question: Look around the room you are in right now โ€” can you spot one living thing and one non-living thing? What did you find?
