Our Community: Neighborhoods, Helpers, and Maps!
Discover what makes a community special and how people work together to help each other every day.
A community is a place where people live, work, and play together. Your neighborhood, your town, and even your school are all communities! Communities can be big, like a busy city with tall buildings, or small, like a quiet village with farms and fields. No matter the size, every community is full of people who care about each other.
In every community, there are special people called community helpers. These are people who do important jobs to keep everyone safe, healthy, and happy. Firefighters put out fires, doctors and nurses help us feel better, teachers help us learn new things, and mail carriers bring letters to our doors. Can you think of a community helper you have seen in your neighborhood?
Communities also have special places that everyone shares. A school is where children learn. A library is where you can borrow books for free. A park is where families can play outside. A hospital is where doctors help sick people get well. These shared places are called public places because they are open for everyone in the community.
We can use a map to find our way around a community. A map is a picture that shows us where things are. Maps use little pictures called symbols to stand for real places β for example, a tiny tree might mean a park, or a little building might mean a school. Maps also have a compass rose that shows us the directions: North, South, East, and West. Learning to read a map is a super helpful skill!
