Our five senses

We use our five senses every day to learn about the world around us!

See, hear, smell, taste, touch.

Did you know your body has five amazing tools that help you explore the world? These tools are called your five senses! Every single day, without even thinking about it, you use your senses to find out what things look like, sound like, feel like, smell like, and taste like. Your senses are always working to keep you safe and help you enjoy life.

Each sense has a special body part that does the work. Your eyes help you see colours, shapes, and movement. Your ears help you hear sounds like music or a friend calling your name. Your nose helps you smell things like flowers or fresh bread. Your tongue helps you taste whether food is sweet, sour, salty, or bitter. And your skin helps you feel whether something is soft, rough, hot, or cold. Together, these five senses make a wonderful team!

Here is a first example: imagine you walk into a kitchen where someone is baking cookies. Your nose smells the warm, sweet scent. Your eyes see the golden cookies on the tray. Your ears might hear the oven timer go ding! When you pick one up, your skin feels that it is warm. And when you take a bite, your tongue tastes how delicious it is. All five senses working together!

Here is a second example: think about playing in a park on a sunny day. You see the bright blue sky with your eyes. You hear birds singing with your ears. You smell the fresh cut grass with your nose. You feel the cool breeze on your skin. And if you eat a snack there, you taste it with your tongue. How wonderful it is to have five senses! ๐ŸŒŸ

Reflection question: Which sense do you think you use the most during your favourite activity, and why?
