Blending sounds into words

We can put sounds together, like puzzle pieces, to make a whole word!

Join sounds to read.

Have you ever heard a word broken into little sounds? Today we are going to learn how to blend sounds together to make words. Blending means you say each sound slowly, then push them all together to hear the whole word. It is like snapping puzzle pieces together โ€” each piece is a sound, and when they all snap together, you get a word!

Here is our first example. Say these sounds slowly: /c/ โ€ฆ /a/ โ€ฆ /t/. Now push them together โ€” faster and faster โ€” and you getโ€ฆ "cat"! You can picture a fluffy cat sitting on a mat. The sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/ snapped together to make the word "cat."

Here is our second example. Try these sounds: /d/ โ€ฆ /o/ โ€ฆ /g/. Push them together and you getโ€ฆ "dog"! You can picture a happy dog wagging its tail. Three little sounds โ€” /d/, /o/, /g/ โ€” joined hands and made the word "dog."

You are already a sound detective! ๐ŸŒŸ Here is something to think about: Can you think of another word and try to hear the little sounds hiding inside it? What sounds do you notice?
