What is division?

Division means sharing things equally so everyone gets the same amount!

Share it out fair.

Have you ever shared cookies with a friend and wanted to make sure you both got the same number? That is exactly what division is! Division is a way of splitting a group of things into equal parts. When we divide, we share fairly so that each group has the same amount.

Here is a yummy example: Imagine you have 6 strawberries and you want to share them equally between 2 friends. You give one strawberry to each friend, one at a time, until they are all gone. Each friend ends up with 3 strawberries. We can say 6 divided by 2 equals 3!

Here is another fun example: You have 8 stickers and you want to put them into 4 equal groups. You place 2 stickers in each group, and every group has the same number. That means 8 divided by 4 equals 2. See how division helps us share fairly?

Division might sound like a big idea, but you already know how to do it — it is just sharing equally! Here is something to think about: if you had 10 grapes and wanted to share them equally with a friend, how many grapes do you think each of you would get?
