Magic of Rhyming Words

Today we discover how some words sound alike at the end โ€” and that makes them rhyme!

Letters and words.

Have you ever noticed that "cat" and "hat" sound the same at the end? Those two words rhyme! Rhyming words share the same ending sound, even if they start with different letters. Rhymes make poems and songs feel bouncy and fun.

Here is our first example: "dog" and "log" both end with the sound "-og". Say them out loud โ€” dog, log! Can you hear how they match? Now try "sun" and "fun" โ€” they both end with "-un". Sun, fun โ€” they rhyme!

When we read stories and poems, spotting rhymes helps us guess what word might come next. It also helps us learn new words because we can see how letter patterns work together. A pattern like "-at" gives us cat, bat, hat, mat, and so many more!

You are a word detective today. Listen carefully to the ending sounds of words, and you will find rhymes hiding everywhere โ€” in books, in songs, even in your own name!
