Magic Letter Sounds: Short Vowels!

Today we learn how the short vowel sounds hide inside little words!

Letters and words.

Have you ever noticed that some letters make a special, short sound? The letters a, e, i, o, u are called vowels, and every word needs at least one! Today we are going to listen for their short, snappy sounds.

Let's meet our first example! The word cat has the short a sound right in the middle โ€” say it slowly: cโ€ฆ aโ€ฆ t. You can hear that quick "ah" sound! The same short a lives in words like hat, map, and nap.

Now let's try our second example! The word pig has the short i sound in the middle โ€” say it slowly: pโ€ฆ iโ€ฆ g. You can hear that quick "ih" sound! The same short i lives in words like sit, him, and big.

You are doing a wonderful job listening to sounds! Here is something to think about: when you sound out a new word, try to find the vowel in the middle โ€” it is like a little treasure that helps you read the whole word. You are already becoming a super reader! ๐ŸŒŸ
