My family and community
A family is the special group of people who love and care for you, and a community is the bigger group of people who live and help each other nearby.
Have you ever looked around at the people in your home and wondered what makes them so special? Those people are your family! A family is a group of people who love and take care of each other. Families can look all sorts of ways โ some have a mum and a dad, some have grandparents, some have brothers and sisters, and some have just one grown-up. Every family is unique and wonderful in its own way.
Now imagine stepping outside your front door. You might see neighbours waving hello, a shopkeeper selling bread, or a teacher walking to school. All of these people together make up your community! A community is a group of people who live near each other and help each other out. Just like your family takes care of you at home, your community takes care of everyone in the neighbourhood.
Here are two examples to help you picture it. Example 1: Maya lives with her grandma, her dad, and her little brother Theo. They eat dinner together every night and help each other when someone feels sad. That is Maya's family! Example 2: On Maya's street there is a library, a fire station, and a park. The librarian helps people find books, the firefighters keep everyone safe, and the park is where all the children play together. All of those people and places make up Maya's community.
๐ Reflection question: Think about one person in your family and one person in your community โ what is one kind thing each of them does to help others?
