Blending Sounds to Read Words

Today you will learn how to blend letter sounds together to read whole words!

Letters and words.

Have you ever looked at a word and wondered how to say it? The secret is blending โ€” that means pushing sounds together, like squishing playdough, until they make a word! Every letter or group of letters makes a sound, and when we blend those sounds, a word appears.

Let's try with the word "cat". First, say each sound slowly: /k/ โ€ฆ /a/ โ€ฆ /t/. Now push them together a little faster: /k-a-t/ โ€ฆ "cat"! You did it! The sounds blended into a real word you already know.

Here is another one: "ship". The letters sh work as a team and make one sound: /sh/. Then we add /i/ and /p/ โ€” /sh-i-p/ โ€ฆ "ship"! Letter teams like sh, ch, and th are called digraphs, and they are very helpful friends.

Every time you see a new word, be a sound detective! Look at each part, say the sounds quietly, then blend them together. With a little practice, you will be reading all kinds of wonderful words. You are doing an amazing job โ€” keep going!
