What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that tells us one complete thought!
Have you ever said something like "I love cats" or "The sun is bright"? Those are sentences! A sentence is a group of words that work together to share one complete idea. It has a beginning and an end, and it makes sense all by itself.
Every sentence starts with a big letter โ we call it a capital letter โ right at the very beginning. And at the end of a sentence, we put a little dot called a full stop (or period). These two things help us know where a sentence starts and where it finishes. Pretty cool, right?
Here are two examples you might know from your own day: - "The dog runs fast." โ This tells us something about a dog. It is a complete thought! - "I eat breakfast every morning." โ This tells us something you do. It makes perfect sense on its own!
A group of words like "the big" or "runs very" is NOT a sentence, because it does not give us a complete thought. We are left wondering โ what about the big? What runs very? A real sentence answers those questions all by itself.
Here is something to think about: Can you look around the room right now and say one sentence about something you see? Give it a try โ you are already a sentence superstar! ๐
