Shapes all around us

Shapes are everywhere — let's learn to spot and name them in the world around us!

Shapes are everywhere.

Have you ever looked at a window and noticed it looks like a rectangle? Or seen a pizza and thought it looks like a circle? Those are shapes! A shape is the outline or form of something — like the edge that goes all the way around an object. Shapes are one of the first things mathematicians learn about, and the great news is you already see them every single day!

Let's meet some shapes. A circle is perfectly round with no corners — like the sun, a coin, or a wheel. A square has four equal sides and four corners — like a cracker or a tile on the floor. A rectangle is like a square but a little stretched out — like a door or a book. A triangle has three sides and three corners — like a slice of pizza or a roof on a house.

Here is a fun example: look at a stop sign next time you are outside. It has eight sides — that shape is called an octagon! And a window in your home is usually a rectangle. Shapes are hiding everywhere — on your plate, in your toys, and even in the letters of the alphabet!

Now here is something to think about: Can you look around the room you are in right now and find one circle and one rectangle? What objects did you find? There are no wrong answers — just keep your eyes open and explore!
